Why Yankees’ Cody Bellinger is in disbelief over Paul Goldschmidt

The New York Yankees have now played 12 consecutive games with Aaron Judge on the mend due to a rib injury, and so far, they are holding the fort despite being without their star slugger. They have now gone 8-4 since Judge went down, including a 12-2 romp over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Many would have thought that their offense would slow down immensely with Judge out, but the remaining Yankees hitters have certainly stepped up.

This Yankees team would be nowhere near where they are (atop the AL East standings with a 44-27 record) if not for the continued incredible play of veteran slugger Paul Goldschmidt. On Tuesday, Goldschmidt went 2-5 from the plate, with one of those hits leaving the yard, and he drove in two runs himself as well.

Coming off that game, Goldschmidt is now sporting an elite OPS of .913 this season. He has experienced a career revival at 38 years of age, leaving Bellinger in disbelief.

“It’s been unbelievable, honestly. What I’ve seen, however long I’ve been in the big leagues, playing against him, he did that plenty of times. Just being able to see it live [and from the same team], it’s special. He’s done a tremendous job,” Bellinger said after the Yankees’ win, via SNY on X (formerly Twitter).

It wasn’t that long ago when it looked like Goldschmidt’s time as a top hitter in MLB was all but over. He recorded an OPS of .716 and .731 over the past two seasons, solid marks, but nowhere near elite. But he has found his groove, and it could not have come at a more opportune time for the Yankees.

The Yankees do have the weapons to hold steady even with Judge on the injured list. Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger make up a dangerous one-two punch at the top of the order, with Bellinger going 3-4 from the plate to drive in two runs in their blowout victory over the White Sox on Tuesday. And with Goldschmidt still tearing the cover of the ball, the Yankees are certainly in good hands.
