White Sox just accomplished jaw-dropping home run feat vs. Rays

The Chicago White Sox continued their climb in the American League Central with a 6-1 win over the American League-leading Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night at Tropicana Field, extending their winning streak to three games and improving to 58-51. The win also matched the team’s season high of seven games above .500 while increasing its division lead to a season-best three games over the Cleveland Guardians.

Chicago’s offense found its punch through four home runs from Miguel Vargas, Andrew Benintendi, Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery. Vargas started the scoring in the first inning with a 433-foot home run, the longest blast of his career. Benintendi followed with a 405-foot homer in the second before Murakami added a 389-foot opposite-field shot in the third. Montgomery capped the scoring in the sixth with a 425-foot two-run homer.

The performance was the fifth time this season that Vargas, Murakami and Montgomery all homered in the same game. The trio tied the all-time single-season record, while also becoming the first three teammates to accomplish the feat five times since Cody Bellinger, Corey Seager and Joc Pederson did it for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Montgomery and Murakami have now homered together in nine games this season.

Montgomery leads the White Sox with 25 home runs, followed closely by Murakami with 24 and Vargas with 23. Murakami reached base for the 17th consecutive game and hit his fourth homer in six contests after previously going without one since May 27. His 24th homer also tied Kazuma Okamoto for the Japanese rookie home run record. Through 74 career games, Murakami owns 24 home runs and a .381 on-base percentage, a combination surpassed over the same strechy only by Yordan Alvarez in MLB history.

Erick Fedde (6-6) earned the victory after allowing one run on four hits across five innings with six strikeouts and no walks. Junior Caminero accounted for Tampa Bay’s only run with his team-leading 30th homer, making him the first Rays player since Carlos Peña (2007-09) to record consecutive 30-home-run seasons. Nick Martinez (10-3) surrendered six runs over six innings, allowing four home runs for the first time in his career after previously giving up more than three runs only once all season.
