The ‘hurdle’ Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres is facing amid injury recovery

The Detroit Tigers continue closely monitoring Gleyber Torres as the veteran infielder works through the final stages of recovery from a left oblique strain. The Tigers’ medical staff remains encouraged by his recent progress, but one important hurdle still keeps him from returning to the everyday lineup.

Torres has continued to take part in pregame fielding drills and defensive work, showing noticeable improvement in his movement around the infield. However, the club continues taking a cautious approach because the three-time All-Star still cannot swing at full speed without risking further aggravation or irritation to the left oblique injury.

The injury dates back to May 2 during a road game vs. the Texas Rangers, when Torres exited after experiencing tightness in his left side while running the bases. The Tigers officially placed him on the 10-day injured list May 6, retroactive to May 4, and the organization has taken a measured approach throughout the recovery process.

MLive Media Group’s Evan Woodbery shared the latest update Wednesday afternoon on his official X, formerly Twitter, after speaking with manager AJ Hinch about the progress of the nine-year veteran’s recovery as the end of May approaches.

“Gleyber Torres (left oblique) continues to do pregame fielding drills, but A.J. Hinch said swinging is the hurdle. He’s not yet able to swing at full speed and playing at 75 or 80 percent is not feasible and could aggravate the injury.”

Oblique injuries remain especially difficult for hitters because rotational power drives nearly every swing. While Torres has made encouraging defensive progress, Detroit is prioritizing health until he can comfortably swing without limitations, discomfort, or reduced bat speed.

Hinch’s comments also reflect the organization’s careful approach after the veteran second baseman previously dealt with a similar left oblique issue during the 2025 season. The Tigers understand the increased risk of reinjury if the infielder returns before fully regaining strength at the plate.

Torres remains one of the club’s most important contributors, making his recovery timeline an increasingly important storyline as the Tigers continue navigating a difficult stretch of the season.
