England just about made it into the last 16 of the World Cup on Wednesday evening as they needed a late brace from captain Harry Kane to come back from a goal down to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in Atlanta.

That victory sees Thomas Tuchel’s side cross the border to take on co-hosts Mexico in the round of 16 as they look to make it a fifth successive major tournament reaching the quarter final stage.

The Three Lions headed into the knockout stage having finished top of Group L with wins over Croatia and Panama sandwiching a goalless draw with Ghana, leaving Tuchel’s side with five wins and a draw since landing in North America for this summer’s tournament.

Mexico have had a hugely impressive World Cup so far, the only team to have won all four of their matches so far without so much as conceding a goal.

Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over a highly thought of Ecuador side was perhaps their most impressive performance of the tournament so far, and the co-hosts will be desperate to put on a good show on Sunday night in what will be their final match of the tournament in Mexico, with the quarter finals onwards being played exclusively in the USA.

Much has been made of Mexico’s record at the Azteca Stadium, which sits more then 7,000 feet above sea level, with just two defeats across their 89 matches in the capital city stadium, winning 70 of those, including being unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches there.

Javier Aguirre’s side have won 10 of their 12 matches since the turn of the year, including each of their last seven, with wins over South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic seeing them finish top of Group A before their two star forwards, Raul Jimenez and Julian Quinones, struck in their 2-0 win over Ecuador in the last 32.

England have won their last four matches against Mexico, including their most recent meeting at Wembley in 2010, but are winless away from home against El Tri, though haven’t played the Mexicans in their home country since 1985.

Mexico’s record at the Azteca is stellar, as is their run of results at this summer’s World Cup, but the level of opposition hasn’t been very higher in either scenario, and with a squad only boasting four players in Europe’s top five leagues, the Three Lions’ quality should be too much for them – a 2-1 England victory perhaps looking most likely.

The winner of Sunday night’s clash will take on either Brazil or Norway in Miami on Saturday night.

Tuchel’s team topple El Tri

England boast by far the stronger of the two squads and have won five of their six matches so far since landing in North America in June.

Mexico have a fantastic record this calendar year and at the Azteca Stadium, but have very seldom played against opposition from outside North America in recent years, so the Three Lions will prove a much tougher test.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have struggled to break down teams who sit deep and defend for the large majority of the 90 minutes, their best performance of the World Cup no doubt coming against a Croatia side who tried to come at them in the opening game, and Sunday night’s clash is expected to be more a more similar match to that compared to the last three, which should play into England’s hands.

Kane and able

Harry Kane is seeminly breaking records in every game he plays, and is currently experiencing one of the most prolific goal scoring seasons of all time, having scored 72 goals for club and country in all competitions since last August following his brace against DR Congo.

At the time of writing, the Bayern Munich striker is just one goal off the lead in the race for the Golden Boot, and the England captain will no doubt be relied on again for his goals as he looks to further extend his already huge lead at the top of England’s all time goal scoring list.

Gallardo carded

Jesus Gallardo has been on the receiving end of more yellow cards than any other player for Mexico in the last 12 months, while no other player in Aguirre’s squad has committed more fouls in the tournament so far.

The Mexican left back is set to have a busy night against a very attacking England side, whose wingers could cause Gallardo problems on Sunday night.
