talkSPORT tips – Best bets and expert advice on Day 3 at Goodwood

There’s more Group 1 action on offer at Goodwood on Thursday, after we were treated to two top level races earlier on in the week, with the Goodwood Cup and the Sussex Stakes. 

Thursday’s card should be a cracker and there’s lots to look forward to on day three.

The feature race is the Group 1 Nassau Stakes and some of the best fillies and mares will be bidding to come out on top.

We’ve tasked our expert with picking out three strong fancies to follow and amongst them is an Aidan O’Brien runner who appears to be a class above her opposition.

2.25 Goodwood – Flann Sunna @ 13/8

This probably isn’t the strongest renewal of the Richmond Stakes on the whole but there is one runner who stands out as potentially special. 

Simon & Ed Crisford have booked the services of William Buick for FLANN SUNNA and it’s easy to see why.

This son of Blue Point doesn’t leap off the page from a pedigree point of view but he has shown a great deal of potential in two starts so far and he remains unbeaten. 

Making his debut at Windsor, he won with plenty in hand and the runner-up won his next start too.

Connections decided to run him in a Class 3 conditions race at Ascot after that and he was even more impressive on that occasion, kicking just shy of five lengths clear at the line. 

He looks like a Group horse on that evidence and probably doesn’t need to improve much here.

3.00 Goodwood – Enceladus @ 9/4

Joseph O’Brien has maintained some excellent form across the season so far and his big race haul includes both the Oaks and the Irish Oaks. He also landed plenty of winners at Royal Ascot last month and amongst them was the progressive ENCELADUS.

He wasn’t able to win in two starts as a juvenile but it didn’t take him long to do so at three, scoring in a Cork maiden over an extended 1m2f on seasonal debut. 

In what proved to be a shrewd move, connections successfully took aim at Royal Ascot’s King George V Stakes.

That was his first start over 1m4f and he kept on well to beat Al Azd by half-a-length, with the runner-up boosting the form by bullying up on his next start. 

More will be needed now tackling a Group 3 but he’s unexposed over the trip and has the scope to progress. 

3.35 Goodwood – Diamond Necklace @ 4/6

There have been some question marks with regards to the form of Aidan O’Brien recently, but that didn’t stop Scandinavia from bolting up in Tuesday’s Goodwood Cup. It could be a similar story here and the incredibly talented DIAMOND NECKLACE is the one to beat.

Immediately showing potential in her two-year-days, the daughter of St Mark’s Basilica was a winner on debut at the Curragh back in August.

O’Brien’s filly then went on to win a Listed race with plenty in hand, before landing the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp.

Both of her starts this season have come in France and she couldn’t have been much more impressive in the French Guineas first time out. 

The conditions were very different in the Prix de Diane but that proved to be no obstacle and she can maintain her unbeaten record here.
