Dictator’s grandson fumes as he headbutts English boxer and gets disqualified from Commonwealth Games

Aziz Abdul, grandson of dictator Idi Amin, was part of a huge controversy in the ring at the Commonwealth Games.

Ugandan boxer Abdul, is related to the political figure who is suggested to have killed 500,000 people in Uganda after a rise to political power via a military coup in 1971.

Naturally there was more scrutiny on the fighter than ever, despite him never having met his grandfather.

He was taking on English star Damar Thomas in the heavyweight division at the Scottish edition of the Commonwealth Games.

It was his debut and he was looking to guarantee himself a medal, but the contest ended in disaster.

Abdul’s headbutt of Thomas ends fight

In the third round, the pair were jossling and grappling in centre ring, looking to impose their weight on each other.

But as Thomas was higher up and Abdul was clinching, the latter decided to take matters into his own hands.

He quickly thrust his head up planting a headbutt into the bottom of the chin of Thomas.

It was a flush shot and Thomas’ head naturally ducked back, as the referee burst on to the scene.

He called a break before waving off the contest and calling it an illegal shot.

Of course, the damaging illegal blow was deemed too much, and Abdul was disqualified.

Thomas was now entering the guaranteed medal places in the semi-final and despite his conduct, Abdul was left furious.

The Ugandan boxer had been denied a chance to secure his nation’s first boxing medal since the Auckland Games in 1990.

But the Glasgow air turned sour as Abdul laid into the decision, and suggested his disqualification was racially motivated.

He said: “When you watch the previous fights of England their boxers create a lot of fouls,” he said.

“I land a heavy punch on him, they never count. Instead of counting they deduct me.

“I am black African. He is in homeland. “All I can say about this is the decision is not right, I am not happy.

“He elbowed me. He caught me with the elbow. It head movement] was not at all intentional. I was trying to come back.

“How can I headbutt someone? I would not. He was the person they wanted to win. He was the winner before.”

It is not the first controversy that Abdul has stirred with his speech during the games.

The 25-year-old has suggested he would become the future ‘King of Scotland’, echoing the words of his grandfather who had vowed exactly that.

For Thomas, he was not impressed with the manner of his victory, but was grateful he is through to the latter stages.

There had already been much eye-catching action earlier in the day, after Orlando Holley-Sotomi had brutally knocked out his rival in one round.
