NBA rumors: Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Celtics ‘intrigue’ keeps trade buzz alive
Trade speculation surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Boston Celtics continues to persist, with a recent report from The Athletic indicating there remains intrigue between the sides despite public efforts to downplay the possibility.
The report comes shortly after NBA analyst Bill Simmons suggested on The Bill Simmons Podcast that he believes Antetokounmpo would be interested in joining Boston, even while questioning whether the Celtics would ultimately want to pursue a blockbuster deal. Simmons said he thinks the two-time MVP respects the organization, wants to remain in the Eastern Conference and could view Boston as one of his preferred destinations.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Eric Nehm, Boston remains one of the more intriguing wild cards in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes as the offseason approaches.
“Behold the wild card in the bunch,” Amick and Nehm wrote.
The report noted that longtime Celtics reporter Steve Bulpett recently indicated there have been no direct trade talks between Boston and the Milwaukee Bucks. However, Amick and Nehm reported there were signs around the February trade deadline that the Celtics were at least exploring the possibility of a deal involving the two-time MVP.
The situation contrasts with the Miami Heat, who have frequently been linked to Antetokounmpo in league circles. Amick and Nehm described Miami’s interest as much more public, while Boston’s approach would likely be more discreet.
The report also comes shortly after NBA analyst Bill Simmons suggested he believes Antetokounmpo would have interest in joining Boston, while simultaneously expressing uncertainty about whether the Celtics would want to pursue such a move.
A major factor in any potential negotiations would be the Celtics’ roster construction, particularly the future of Jaylen Brown. Amick and Nehm noted that speculation surrounding Brown’s long-term future has quieted after generating attention earlier in the offseason.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Celtics intrigue continues to fuel trade speculation

If Boston were willing to include Brown in a package, the Bucks would receive one of the league’s most accomplished players. The five-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA selection and 2024 NBA Finals MVP is coming off another strong season and remains in the middle of his prime.
However, the report also noted that Milwaukee may prioritize younger assets and draft capital if it ever decides to move Antetokounmpo. That reality could complicate a direct deal between the two Eastern Conference rivals.
Perhaps the most significant factor is Antetokounmpo’s own perspective. According to Amick and Nehm, league sources have long maintained that he has interest in Miami, but there are also indications he is intrigued by Boston’s situation.
With Joe Mazzulla coming off a 56-win season and Jayson Tatum leading a deep roster, the Celtics present a path back to immediate championship contention.
The report also pointed to comments from Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens after the season.
“One of the things that we’ve got to figure out is how to have more of an impact at the rim,” Stevens said.
Few players fit that description better than Antetokounmpo. For now, there is no indication that a trade is imminent, but the reported intrigue on both sides continues to keep Boston firmly in the conversation.
