WWE Backlash 2026 receives John Cena boost after WrestleMania hosting gig

After his first WrestleMania hosting gig, WWE icon John Cena isn’t finished, as he will return for the upcoming 2026 Backlash PLE in Tampa, Florida.

Benchmark International Arena, the venue that Backlash will take place in, advertised that Cena “returns to Tampa” for the show. While his role isn’t specified, it’s likely going to be a hosting gig as he is retired from in-ring competition.

This comes less than a month after Cena hosted WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, Nevada, from Apr. 18-19. He showed up each night of the event in a suit and tie, a profound change from his usual jean shorts and baseball hat.

Why is John Cena coming back to WWE Backlash 2026?

The reason for Cena’s WWE return is unclear. WWE brought him back for WrestleMania 42 to boost struggling ticket sales, capitalizing on the hype of his retirement match in December 2025.

Maybe the upcoming Backlash PLE wasn’t selling as well as WWE hoped. That could explain them bringing him back so soon after his last hosting gig.

There’s also a slim chance that Cena could get physical. During WrestleMania 42 Night 2, Cena had a moment with Danhausen, The Miz, and Kit Wilson. Now, Danhausen has a tag team match against The Miz and Wilson, provided he can find a partner. Despite how unlikely it is, there’s always a chance Cena could fill that void.

Backlash currently has five matches announced for the card. Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu for the World Heavyweight Championship appears to be the main event.

Some of the other matches include Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker, his former Vision stablemate, Iyo Sky vs. Asuka, and the Danhausen tag team match. Additionally, Trick Williams will defend the United States Championship against Sami Zayn in a WrestleMania 42 rematch. He beat Zayn to win the United States Championship for the first time at the Showcase of the Immortals.
