Bob Nightengale guarantees Dodgers World Series 3-peat, Tarik Skubal free agency signing after trade

On Saturday evening, the Los Angeles Dodgers enraged the rest of the baseball world when it was announced by ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan that they would be acquiring star pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. The move added arguably the game’s best pitcher to its undisputed best roster, giving the Dodgers an even deeper pitching rotation as they look to win a third straight World Series this fall.

Recently, MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today weighed in on the move and what it means for Los Angeles’ three-peat aspirations.

“…go ahead and start the parade route. The Dodgers are going to three-peat. You know it. Their rivals know it. And those demanding a salary cap know it,” noted Nightengale on usatoday.com. “…They wanted nothing to do with the possibility of facing Skubal. And what’s the best way to avoid that? Get him yourself. Oh, and just to get any suspense out of the way — Skubal will be signing with the Dodgers as a free agent.”

It’s certainly a bold prediction, but it is an educated one, as the Dodgers indeed have a history of signing their trade acquisitions to lucrative free agent contracts, as well as prying other superstars from various teams with huge deals on the open market, having mostly assembled their elite roster through their massive spending ability rather than more organic team-building routes.

All of this has prompted calls from the rest of the MLB for a salary cap to be put into place, which many think could lead to a prolonged lockout before next season, if not threaten the season taking place altogether.

For now, the Dodgers will look to add another ring to their trophy case with Skubal in the mix.
