Why Knicks are perfect Summer League fit for undrafted St. John’s guard Ozyiah Sellers

LAS VEGAS — There are four members of the 2025-26 St. John’s Red Storm playing in the NBA’s Summer League. Only three — Zuby Ejiofor, Dillon Mitchell, and Bryce Hopkins — were 2026 NBA Draft picks.

Ozyiah Sellers started 36 of 37 games under Rick Pitino last season, averaging 10.3 points, but went undrafted. He wasn’t without summer plans for long, though, agreeing to join the New York Knicks out in Las Vegas.

After New York’s third Summer League game — and first victory — Sellers described his transition from the Red Storm to the Knicks as smooth. He credited it to the “perfect” fit between himself and the organization, which he told ClutchPoints stems from his experience with Pitino at St. John’s. Sellers said that the Knicks, during the playoffs, reminded him plenty of Pitino’s program.

“Just how hard they play, how bad they wanna win. Like I said, coming from St. John’s, I feel like we kind of have that same mentality. We wanted to win really bad. So, it wasn’t too hard of a transition as far as mindset-wise. I feel like they’re two kind of similar programs as far as mindset. I feel like that was kind of easy to transition to, but it’s definitely something that you gotta bring every night,” Sellers explained.

The guard added that going undrafted is only fueling him to succeed further. Knicks’ Captain Jalen Brunson often says that any NBA player in need of additional motivation is in the wrong business. He won’t have to worry about Sellers if he makes the team to any degree.

“I feel like I’ve played with a chip on my shoulder pretty much my whole life, but now it’s a little elevated. Just, every chance I get, every opportunity I get, I try to make the most of it. Regardless if I’m making shots, missing shots. I just try to bring energy, play hard, and just let the rest take care of itself,” Sellers told reporters at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The guard has at least one more preliminary game ahead of the Summer League tournament to make his case to Knicks brass. New York’s squad takes on the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.
