Why Kings aren’t firing Doug Christie despite possible 60-loss season

The Sacramento Kings are currently gearing up for their final game of the season on Sunday on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers. With a loss, the Kings would suffer their 60th defeat of the 2025-26 season, and calls have been growing for the team to move on from head coach Doug Christie.

However, it has now been confirmed that this will not be transpiring anytime soon.

“Despite a 22-59 record that has them at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, the Sacramento Kings are retaining head coach Doug Christie for next season, team sources told ESPN on Sunday,” reported Anthony Slater of ESPN.com.

Christie was brought in to replace Mike Brown, the current New York Knicks head coach who was fired midway through the Kings’ season a year ago. While a 22-59 record is obvioulsy not a sign of great coaching, it should be noted that Christie was tasked with working with arguably the worst-constructed roster in modern NBA history, with an utterly bizarre mix of midrange shooters and aging veterans not at all tenable in the current state of the league, with little to no athleticism or young talent to speak of.

The Kings will be hoping for some good luck in the NBA Draft lottery next month, when they will hope to get the opportunity to draft a blue-chip prospect to finally infuse some young talent in the mix.

For now, tipoff vs the Blazers is set for 8:30 pm ET on Sunday, in what will officially not be Christie’s last game manning the sidelines.
