Why Juan Soto playing the Yankees reminds Trevor Plouffe of Major League

Even though the New York Mets aren’t one of the best teams, they have one of the best players in Juan Soto. On Friday, the Mets began a three-game crosstown series against the Yankees.

In many ways, the story is Juan Soto against the Yankees. A concept that former MLB player-turned-analyst Trevor Plouffe strongly maintains, per Chris Rose Sports. When asked about whether that storyline holds up, Plouffe didn’t hold back, citing recent history.

“I think there’s a ton of it still,” he said. “It’s okay to have that storyline. This is one of the best players in baseball. You got to see Aaron Judge and Juan Soto hit back-to-back in a magical year for the Yankees. And he ends up going for, not the crosstown rival, I don’t know if you call it that, but the crosstown team. So I know there are a lot of mixed emotions with Juan Soto and Yankee fans, and that’s okay, that’s sports, that’s life, people.”

The matchup does come down in part to Soto vs. Judge.

In 2024, Soto was part of the Yankees and was Judge’s better half. Together, they hit two and three in the batting order. Soto finished with career highs in batting average (.288), home runs (41), and runs scored (128). Meanwhile, Judge hit .322 with 58 home runs and 144 RBIs en route to the American League MVP.

They eventually made it to the World Series, ultimately losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Today, Soto is the potent offensive weapon the Mets have. However, he has endured some struggles while persevering through injuries.

Soto is batting .269 with 28 hits, five home runs, and 13 RBIs.
