Washington Freedom secure rezoning approval for 10,000-capacity stadium in Frederick

Washington Freedom have obtained rezoning clearance to construct a privately funded 10,000-seat cricket stadium in Frederick, Maryland, bringing a four-year hunt for a permanent home to a close. The franchise assessed somewhere between 15 and 20 candidate sites across the wider Washington DC area before settling on Frederick, a location that first entered serious consideration roughly two years ago.

The Frederick Planning Commission gave unanimous backing to the rezoning application on July 14, 2025. The final City Council vote was scheduled for August 6, 2026, with the franchise subsequently confirming that approval had been granted. A franchise statement, conveyed the ownership group's appreciation for the community process

"We're incredibly grateful to the City Council for the thoughtful consideration they've given this project and for the many people throughout Frederick who have taken the time to engage with us along the way. This vote represents an important step forward, but we know there is still meaningful work ahead. From the beginning, our goal has been to create something that belongs in Frederick - a place where world-class cricket can thrive while also creating new opportunities for young athletes, families and the broader community. We're excited to continue that work together and bring the vision for the cricket park closer to reality," Sanjay Govil, owner of Washington Freedom said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

What will the Frederick ground include?

The facility will be built around a five-pitch square. To allow the playing surface adequate time to settle, the wicket block is earmarked for early installation so the pitches can consolidate through the Washington winter ahead of competitive use. Freedom are targeting the 2027 Major League Cricket season as the venue's debut, though franchise officials have stopped short of offering a firm guarantee given that construction timelines remain subject to progress on the ground.

Alongside the cricket infrastructure, Freedom have committed to delivering a public riverfront park next to the stadium. The franchise will design, fund, build and maintain the space, which is planned to accommodate walking and cycling trails, picnic areas, boat access, farmers markets and cultural events. The Frederick area already supports approximately five or six cricket academies with a combined enrolment of around 400 to 500 young players, giving the new facility an established grassroots community to serve.

How does the stadium fit Freedom's broader cricket ambitions?

On the field, Washington Freedom have been the standout franchise in Major League Cricket's short history. The team appeared in three successive MLC finals across 2024, 2025 and 2026, a run no other side has matched. Their 2024 title, secured under head coach Ricky Ponting, came at the expense of San Francisco Unicorns, whom they defeated by 96 runs. The 2025 and 2026 finals both ended in narrow defeats.

Off the field, Govil has built a portfolio that extends well beyond the United States. Govil took an equal 50 per cent share in Welsh Fire alongside Glamorgan and has signalled openness to entering the Big Bash League if Australian cricket makes franchise ownership available to private investors. The Frederick project anchors the domestic side of that wider strategy. Elsewhere in MLC, Los Angeles Knight Riders have already opened a new venue at Pomona, a ground that forms part of the cricket programme planned for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
