Why Blue Jays’ Spencer Arrighetti won’t face Astros after trade

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti in a trade with the Houston Astros on Monday. Toronto had to move outfielder Daulton Varsho to make the deal happen, but Arrighetti is a young pitcher who has displayed signs of promise. The Blue Jays happen to be playing the Astros in Houston at the moment, but Arrighetti won’t pitch against his former team as he recovers from a foot injury. The good news is that he seemingly may only need one rehab start before returning.

“Spencer Arrighetti will make a rehab start with the Bisons on Thursday,” Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports. “He told (John) Schneider he’s ready to pitch. Could skip his rehab start and face the Astros tomorrow, if they needed him to.”

Arrighetti could impact the Blue Jays’ rotation for years to come. He has struggled to find much success at the big league level so far in his career, but, as mentioned, he has displayed signs of promise at times. So far in 2026, Arrighetti has turned in a 4.60 ERA across 17 outings.

He is under team control through 2029. While the Blue Jays were realistically more of a seller than a buyer during the trade deadline, they did add pitchers such as Arrighetti and Jose Soriano, who have multiple years of team control remaining.

As long as no setbacks occur, Spencer Arrighetti could make his Blue Jays debut quite soon. It just will not happen against the Astros — even if he feels like he could pitch tomorrow.
