Red Sox’s Adley Rutschman breaks silence on shocking Orioles trade

After spending the first five years of his MLB career with the Baltimore Orioles, Adley Rutschman was traded to the Boston Red Sox prior to the deadline. The catcher is now coming to terms with his new reality.

Rutschman is eager to join his franchise and help Boston’s playoff push. But he won’t soon forget all the memories he made with the Orioles, via Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner.

“It’s a lot of unbelievable memories and I made a lot of great friends for life,” Rutschman said. “It’s some tough goodbyes, but we’re onto the next thing and excited to be here.”

Baltimore selected the backstop with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. That moment alone made him forever tied to the Orioles organization. Over his 572 games with the franchise, Rutschman hit .254 with 68 home runs and 277 RBIs. He was named an All-Star three times, including the 2026 season where Rutschman is hitting .251 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs through his first 67 games.

The catcher was expected to be the catalyst of a brighter future for Baltimore. His tenure saw the Orioles make the playoffs twice, making it no further than the Division Series. The franchise never lived up to the expectations of having Rutschman behind the dish. And with extension talks looming, the Orioles decided to move on.

The Red Sox paid a hefty price to acquire the catcher, showing how keen they were to acquire him. Because of that it’s clear Rutschman will be valued in his new home. Still, the Orioles have been all he has known in MLB thus far. He will soon report to the Sox and begin life in Boston. But Rutschman’s Baltimore memories won’t suddenly disappear.
