Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards shuts down question about ‘catching up’ in Western Conference
The Minnesota Timberwolves saw their season come to an end Friday night after a 139-109 Game 6 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semifinals, and Anthony Edwards quickly dismissed a postgame question regarding whether Minnesota needs to “catch up” in the Western Conference.
After the loss, Edwards was asked how much work the Timberwolves still needed to do to return to contention in a loaded conference.
“How much work do you guys have to do going forward here to catch up in the Western Conference and to contend again?”
Edwards rejected the premise of the question.
“To catch up? I don’t know, man. I think that, I don’t think that’s a question for me.”
The response came after another disappointing postseason ending for Minnesota, which fell short of reaching the Western Conference Finals for the third consecutive season. The Timberwolves entered the playoffs with high expectations following strong regular-season performances and a first-round series win over the Denver Nuggets.

Anthony Edwards shuts down ‘catching up’ question after Timberwolves’ playoff exit to Spurs
Edwards once again led Minnesota offensively in the elimination game, finishing with 24 points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals in 36 minutes. However, he struggled with efficiency, shooting 9-for-26 from the field and 2-for-7 from three-point range as the Spurs controlled the game for most of the second half.
The 24-year-old remained one of Minnesota’s focal points throughout the postseason. Across 10 playoff games, Edwards averaged 21.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 42.8% from the field and 31.7% from beyond the arc.
San Antonio’s size, pace and defensive pressure proved difficult for Minnesota to handle throughout the series. Led by Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs consistently controlled tempo and exposed Minnesota’s offensive inconsistencies.
Despite the lopsided finish, Edwards’ response reflected confidence in the Timberwolves’ current foundation rather than concern about the broader conference landscape. Minnesota still features a core led by Edwards alongside established veterans and several key rotation pieces expected to return next season.
The offseason now becomes critical for a Timberwolves team attempting to regroup after another deep playoff run ended short of the conference finals. Minnesota’s ability to address roster depth, health concerns and offensive consistency will likely shape whether the franchise can re-emerge as a contender in the West next season.
