Scotland delivered a statement win in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group C encounter, thumping Italy by 73 runs at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday, February 9. The result marked a strong response from the Scots after their opening defeat and showcased their firepower against tournament debutants Italy.

Batting first after Italy won the toss and chose to bowl, Scotland posted a commanding 207/4 in their 20 overs, a total that proved too steep a mountain for the Italians. George Munsey starred with the bat, top-scoring with a brilliant 84 off 54 balls, anchoring the innings with power and precision.

His knock laid the platform for a big total as Scotland capitalised from the word 'go'. Supporting him were useful contributions from the rest of the top order, helping Scotland clear the 200-run mark and put serious pressure on Italy.

In reply, Italy never really got going in their chase. The targets loomed large as the batters struggled to build partnerships, eventually being restricted to 134 all out inside 17 overs. Richie Berrington's bowlers did the job with discipline, regularly hitting their lines and lengths and forcing errors from the Italian line-up. Smart fielding and tight death overs sealed a comfortable win for the Scots.

This emphatic victory gives Scotland a much-needed boost as they look to climb the Group C standings, while Italy will be left to regroup after a tough outing in their first assignment of this year's twenty-team tournament.

Top bowling performance: Michael Leask

It was a record-breaking night for the Scottish off-spinner. Michael Leask was eventually the difference between Italy and a victory on Monday afternoon. After scoring a brisk cameo with the bat, he returned with an impressive figure of 4 for 17 in his full quota of four overs. His bowling was crucial in his side's win.
