Spurs news: Victor Wembanyama, Rudy Gobert share special moment after Game 6 win
The San Antonio Spurs are officially heading to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017, and the vibes in South Texas have never been higher. Following a 139-109 shellacking of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night, the biggest story wasn’t the final score; it was the touching moment between the two French giants who dominated the series.
As the buzzer sounded at Target Center, Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert met at mid-court for a long, heartfelt embrace. It was a symbolic passing of the torch. Wembanyama, who recently edged out Gobert for Defensive Player of the Year, showed nothing but love for his mentor. Gobert has long been a big brother figure to the young phenom, and despite the lopsided series finale, the mutual respect was on full display.
The pair had nothing but good things to say about each other throughout the course of this series, with Gobert even acknowledging the greatness of the young French phenom.

The game itself was a total masterclass by San Antonio. While Wembanyama finished with a solid 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks in just 27 minutes, the rest of the roster stepped up to bury Minnesota. Stephon Castle led the charge with a monster 32-point, 11-rebound double-double, while De’Aaron Fox added 21 points and nine assists.
On the other side, it was a night to forget for the Timberwolves. Rudy Gobert struggled significantly, finishing with zero points and three rebounds on 0-of-4 shooting in 21 minutes. Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 24 points, but the team simply couldn’t find an answer for the Spurs’ connected defense.
The Spurs move on to face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in what promises to be a legendary WCF matchup. For now, the “French Connection” remains the heart of the NBA’s newest rivalry.
