Spencer Torkelson walks off Blue Jays for epic Tigers win
Coming into Friday evening’s tilt against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park, the Detroit Tigers found themselves struggling with a 19-25 record, one spot out of last place in the American League Central Division. It also doesn’t help that the Tigers have been struck with injury troubles to their starting rotation.
Thanks to some late-game heroics from Spencer Torkelson on Friday evening, their record looks slightly better now. Torkelson delivered a two-out, two-strike RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning off Jays reliever Jeff Hoffman to claim the game for Detroit, their 20th victory.

Afterward, Torkelson said that he was trying to keep it simple against an intimidating opponent on the mound.
“Against him, you can’t really kind of — can’t really manipulate the barrel too much when the guy’s throwing 98,” Torkelson said via The Detroit News. “With a really good slider, as well. So, it was just shorten up and just try to get the job done.”
Not only did the theatrics from Torkelson help the Tigers pick up a valuable victory, but also helped them halt what was a three-game losing skid.
“It feels like I’ve just walked up there with two strikes recently, so it feels good,” Torkelson said. “But no, he’s got good stuff, and really the entire battle is just trying to grind it out and do whatever he takes to get the job done. And then as soon as I got the two strikes, just had to reinforce that plan. And try to do too much or not. Get the job done by any means.”
The Tigers and Blue Jays will continue their three-game series on Saturday in Detroit.
