Shams shuts down all Dusty May-Magic chatter amid Jamahl Mosley firing
On Monday morning, the Orlando Magic made headlines by firing head coach Jamahl Mosley less than 24 hours after their playoff loss to the Detroit Pistons. In that series, the Magic went up 3-1 before becoming the second team in these playoffs to squander such a lead, and now, the search is on for the next leader of the team.
Some have speculated that reigning national championship-winning coach Dusty May of Michigan would be a candidate for the Orlando job, but those rumors had cold water dumped on them by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania during a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
“The Orlando Magic lost in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year.. They fired Jamahl Mosley and there’s gonna be a ton of names that get thrown around.. I particularly don’t see Dusty May going to the Orlando Magic,” said Charania, per McAfee on X, formerly Twitter.
May seems more than happy to run things back in Michigan after leading his team to the top of the college basketball mountain this past year.
Meanwhile, Orlando is still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong after choking their series against the Pistons. The Magic had a huge lead in Game 6 of this series at home, but ended up scoring an astonishing 19 points in the entire second half of that game, sending the series back to Detroit for a Game 7, where they were predictably blown out.
Many will wonder how things might have gone had Franz Wagner not gotten injured in this series, but it was clear after the devastating loss that a new voice was needed in the Orlando locker room.
However, that new voice will not belong to May.
