Pirates’ Ryan O’Hearn dealt brutal injury update right before trade deadline

The Pittsburgh Pirates remain in the thick of things in the National League Central Division standings with a 56-56 record through the first 112 games of the season, and hope to return to the MLB Playoffs for what would be the first time since 2015.

However, with the MLB Trade Deadline now just days away, the Pirates were dealt a significant blow on the injury front. 1B/OF Ryan O’Hearn is set to miss at least the next six to eight weeks after suffering a left quad strain during Pittsburgh’s loss on Friday to the Cincinnati Reds while running to first base; in a corresponding move, RHP Isaac Mattson was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.

As O’Hearn would admit, the injury setback is frustrating to deal with.

“​Honestly, it’s frustrating. I don’t know what is wrong with my quads. I have got to figure it out this winter. I have never had issues like this,” O’Hearn said. “I have to figure out what I have to do to make that better moving forward. So I just will do whatever they tell me to do in the training room and try to be around the guys as much as possible.”

So far this season, O’Hearn has hit 17 home runs with 69 RBI while posting a .270 batting average in 96 games played. Having previously played for the Kansas City Royals, Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres, O’Hearn is in his first season with the Pirates after agreeing to a two-year, $29 million deal this past January.

Earlier this season, O’Hearn broke the Pirates’ single-game RBI record with a 10-RBI, three-home-run game.
