Padres rumors: San Diego sale could be completed in coming days

The San Diego Padres are the hottest team in Major League Baseball right now, winners of seven in a row after an insane 6-run comeback win on Wednesday night. Jackson Merrill, the future of the Friars, robbed Julio Rodriguez of a home run and later walked it off with a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning. If you are an owner looking to buy the team, the excitement just got a whole hell of a lot better.

The rumors of the franchise’s sale have been circulating for roughly a year, but the talks have really heated up over the last few months. Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores is reportedly one of the bidders in the final stages. Dennis Lin, who covers the Padres for The Athletic, updated that the sale of the team could come as soon as next week. April had always been the main month in the timeline of the sale.

“The San Diego Padres’ sale process is approaching its conclusion, with an agreement between the Seidler family and a preferred bidder expected as soon as early next week, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic.

The development would cap a months-long auction that has drawn four finalist groups and a potential sale price of around $3.5 billion, a figure that would shatter the MLB record for a franchise sale ahead of a pivotal labor fight. The current benchmark of $2.42 billion was established in 2020 when Steve Cohen purchased the New York Mets.”

Here are the other three groups in the final stages. Co-owner of English Premier League club Chelsea, José E. Feliciano; Owner of EPL club Everton, Dan Friedkin; and the lead owner of the Golden State Warriors, Joe Lacob.
