Packers’ Devonte Wyatt recalls emotional first call after contract extension

Devonte Wyatt knew exactly who he needed to call first after securing his financial future. The Packers defensive tackle signed a three-year, $57 million extension on July 27, and his first phone call afterward went to his mother.

“She started screaming and crying, and that’s when I started crying,” Wyatt said, describing her reaction when he shared the news. “So yeah, that was her reaction.”

Asked how the moment landed given everything he had been through to get there, Wyatt made clear the significance went well beyond the paycheck.

“All the hard work I put in, on the offseason, going through the season, the injuries, just stuff like that,” Wyatt said. “Just knowing I’m still able to get what I got is a blessing. No matter what it was, it’s a blessing.”

The extension ends any uncertainty about Wyatt’s future in Green Bay just as he was entering the final year of his rookie contract. The deal includes a $20 million signing bonus and locks him in through the 2029 season, with an average annual value of $19 million.

Wyatt’s path to this deal was not always smooth.

A first-round pick out of Georgia in 2022, he battled injuries that limited him to 24 of a possible 34 games over the past two seasons, including a broken fibula and ankle injury that ended his 2025 campaign early.

When healthy, though, Wyatt has flashed real disruptive ability, posting 101 career tackles, 16 sacks, a forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries, and becoming just the second Packer, alongside Rashan Gary, to record at least four sacks in each of the last three seasons.

Head coach Matt LaFleur has been effusive about Wyatt’s growth both on and off the field, saying he has watched him mature not just as a player but as a person during his time in Green Bay.

With the extension now official, Wyatt joins fellow 2022 draftmates Christian Watson, Sean Rhyan, and Zach Tom on long-term deals, giving the Packers a core piece of their defensive line locked up as they push for a deeper playoff run in 2026.
