Watch Maple Leafs’ Gavin McKenna take the ice in Toronto uniform for first time

Gavin McKenna finally got to put on the jersey Toronto has been waiting to see him in. The Maple Leafs’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft hit the ice in his new No. 92 uniform for the first time this week, joining fellow prospects as development camp got underway.

McKenna described how natural it felt once he was back on the ice.

“When you’re out there, it’s pretty easy to be dialed in,” McKenna said in development camp. “It’s the game I’ve played my entire life. So when I’m out there, I’m having fun, I feel comfortable and confident. And then off the ice, you kind of want to let go and hang out with your buddies and get to know everyone. Just enjoy the city and the time I got here.”

The jersey number itself came with its own storyline.

McKenna wore No. 72 throughout his time with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers and at Penn State, but the Maple Leafs’ free agent signing of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who has worn 72 for most of his career, forced a change.

With Nos. 9 and 27 both retired by the franchise, McKenna settled on 92, reaching out to former Leaf Jeff O’Neill, one of only three players to previously wear the number, to make sure he was comfortable with the choice.

McKenna also debuted new equipment alongside the new number, switching from CCM to Bauer Hockey, joining a list of stars that includes Cale Makar, David Pastrnak, and Jack Hughes.

The 18-year-old winger signed a three-year entry-level contract with Toronto earlier this month after a standout freshman season at Penn State, where he tied for fifth in the NCAA with 51 points and finished as a top-10 Hobey Baker finalist. He arrives in Toronto after also winning CHL Player of the Year honors in the WHL the season prior.

With general manager John Chayka overseeing a Maple Leafs rebuild after the team missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade, McKenna is expected to push for a roster spot when training camp opens this fall, giving Toronto its most hyped prospect debut in years.
