Mexico will head into their first knockout stage match in the World Cup since 2018 as favourites for victory having impressed in their group stage campaign.

Javier Aguirre’s side are one of only three nations to have won all three of their group stage matches, and are the only team still to concede a goal at the World Cup, having finished top of Group A following wins over South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic.

El Tri’s streak of reaching the knockout out stage at seven consecutive editions of the World Cup came to an end four years ago after they failed to progress out of the group stage, so will be thrilled to be back beyond the first stage this time around.

The two-time reigning North American champions will fancy their chances at reaching the last 16 for the first eighth time in nine attempts with victory over Ecuador tonight, the co-hosts currently on a six match winning streak and unbeaten in their last 11.

Ecuador sneaked through into the last 32 of this summer’s World Cup as one of the best third placed finishers, with four points being enough to see them into the knockout stage.

Sebastian Beccacece’s side fell to an agonising 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening match of the campaign, conceding a 90th minute winner, before being held to a disappointing 0-0 draw against tournament debutants Curacao.

That result left them needing a victory from their final group game against four-time world champions Germany, who had won both of their matches in the tournament prior, and after falling behind inside two minutes, La Tri turned the match around to win 2-1.

Their first ever victory over the Germans also saw them reach the knockout stage for just the second time in their history, and the first time since 2006.

The two nations have met each other before on 24 occasions, with Mexico leading the head-to-head 14-4, though the last three meetings have all ended in draws, the most recent of which coming as recently as October, where the two played out a 1-1 draw in Guadalajara.
