Mets’ trade deadline fire sale starts with AJ Minter-Twins deal

The New York Mets are largely expected to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline. They are at the bottom of the NL East with little hope of making a push for postseason baseball. With the deadline approaching, the Amazins have swung their first deal, which involves AJ Minter and the Minnesota Twins.

Minter is heading to the Twins in a trade, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Mets are acquiring Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick in this deal, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. Passan noted that this is likely only the beginning for New York this trade season.

“Trade news: The Minnesota Twins are acquiring left-handed reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets, sources tell ESPN. The Mets’ selling starts with one of the top relievers on the market. There will be many more Mets deals to come before Aug. 3,” Passan wrote on Thursday night.

Minter was widely considered one of the best relievers on the trade market, as Passan noted. He has been a solid hand out of the bullpen for several years. He only pitched for the Mets sparingly in his two seasons with the team. But in the 34 career innings he threw with New York, he pitched to a 2.12 ERA while striking out 34 and walking just seven hitters.

The Twins have struggled with their bullpen this season, especially after last season’s fire sale. Minnesota is now on the other side of that as they prepare to chase down an AL Wild Card spot. For the Mets, the focus turns to the next trade to be made before the August 3 MLB trade deadline.
