Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reveals why Juan Soto is playing despite injury concerns

Juan Soto hasn’t been playing at 100% as he’s been dealing with lingering injuries in his foot, wrist, and elbow. While a short trip to the IL could give him time to reset and recover, New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed on Saturday why he continues playing Soto.

Before the start of Saturday’s contest against the New York Yankees, Mendoza claimed that as long as Soto’s injuries don’t put the 27-year-old in any “risk,” then he will continue playing through the injuries, according to Laura Albanese of  Newsday. That’s even with Juan Soto receiving treatment on his foot while also feeling pain in his wrist and elbow.

“As long as he’s not putting anything at risk, he’ll continue to play,” said Mendoza about Soto.

The nine-year veteran has played in 29 of the Mets’ available 44 games this season. When healthy, he’s played relatively well, as he owns a .271 batting average and .363 OBP while recording 29 hits, six home runs, and 14 RBIs through 107 at-bats.

Juan Soto suffered a foot injury after taking a foul ball off his foot during the Mets’ 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on May 13. The wrist injury was noticed sometime in mid-May after the four-time All-Star grimaced after swinging the bat, and the elbow discomfort doesn’t appear to be serious.

While the injury concerns are prevalent, Juan Soto will continue playing through it. He is set to bat third in the lineup for the Mets on Saturday to help the club earn a much-needed victory over their cross-town rivals. After losing the first game of the three-game series 5-2 on Friday, Soto and his teammates hope to even up the series 1-1 before Game 3 on Sunday.
