Manchester United v Liverpool predictions: Selections for huge Super Sunday clash

Two of English football’s biggest rivals battle it out at Old Trafford this weekend when Manchester United take on Liverpool.

With both teams looking good for a Champions League spot, this game is perhaps more important for managers Michael Carrick and Arne Slot, amid uncertainty over their futures.

The contest will be broadcast live on Sky Sports at 15:30 BST on Sunday afternoon.

United can claim bragging rights against bitter rivals

Michael Carrick and Arne Slot face off this weekend, and a significant defeat for one of them could prove costly for their futures at their clubs.

United find themselves in third place and on course for Champions League football next season. The Red Devils sit three points clear of Liverpool in fourth, who are in a similarly strong position given that they are eight points ahead of sixth place.

Bruno Fernandes is in the form of his life having registered a whopping 19 Premier League assists this season.

The Portuguese has found a new lease of life since Carrick’s appointment in January, and United have proved to be more than capable of beating some of the top sides in the league, with notable wins coming against Manchester City and Arsenal.

The Red Devils have been excellent at home under Carrick, winning six of their last seven at Old Trafford, and both teams have scored in their last four home fixtures.  

Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili remain out for the away side, which could add to the defensive frailties they have shown all season. United’s free flowing attacking football of late could prove too much for Liverpool, with Sesko and Fernandes constant threats.

Liverpool arrive in Manchester on a run of three consecutive league victories and Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were among the goals in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace last time out.

They could help the Merseysiders to find the net, but United are still fancied to hold sway.

In-form Sesko to deliver for Red Devils

Benjamin Sesko was on target for Manchester United in the win over Brentford last time out and he will be full of confidence heading into Sunday’s game.

The Slovenian’s height and athleticism has proved to be a handful for Premier League defenders, and with Fernandes’ ability from set-plays and crosses into the box, he looks a good price to find the net at any time.

Brazilian star could find himself in the book quickly

United midfielder Casemiro has picked up eight yellow cards in the league this season, and he looks likely to add to that tally in what is always a highly charged contest.

Liverpool have an energetic midfield, and with the nimble Wirtz occupying the same spaces as the Brazilian, he may not have the legs to keep up with the German.

With tempers likely to flare, Casemiro looks a strong choice to be shown a card by referee Darren England.
