How Buccaneers HC Todd Bowles responded to Baker Mayfield’s contract extension comments

Todd Bowles is not letting his quarterback’s contract frustration become a training camp distraction. The Buccaneers head coach addressed Baker Mayfield’s pointed comments from a day earlier, when the quarterback told reporters he felt “disrespected” and “undervalued” after extension talks with Tampa Bay stalled.

Asked about the fallout, Bowles kept his response short.

“I didn’t have much of a reaction to what Baker said yesterday,” Bowles said. “He had to say what he had to say, and today it was all about ball.”

Bowles reiterated the same message when pressed further on the situation.

“I don’t have much to say on it. I’ve heard much worse,” Bowles said. “We’re good.”

Mayfield’s comments Thursday were about as candid as they come for a starting quarterback. He said he had set a deadline to get a deal done before training camp began, only to watch negotiations fall apart entirely.

“I really know what I brought to this franchise, leadership-wise and even play-wise,” Mayfield said. “It’s been some of the best years of my career, and I think it’s only going to trend upwards. So disappointing in that regard is to feel disrespected a little bit. That’s really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after thinking you earned it.”

Mayfield reportedly received a two-year offer well below the $50 million per season he was seeking, a threshold currently cleared by 12 starting quarterbacks around the league. He enters the final year of the three-year, $100 million contract he signed in 2024, carrying a $39.975 million cap hit for 2026 after completing 343 of 543 passes for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last season.

The situation carries added weight given the state of Tampa Bay’s roster heading into the season. The Buccaneers are also dealing with a trade request from defensive tackle Vita Vea, who has been holding in at camp after asking to be dealt, adding another layer of tension to a locker room already navigating one unresolved contract situation.

For Bowles, keeping both storylines from spilling into practice has become an early test of his ability to manage a roster with real financial questions hanging over multiple key players.

But with 62-year-old head tactician opting to keep the focus on football rather than engage further, both sides appear ready to let Mayfield’s performance this season do the talking, one way or another, in whatever contract conversations follow once the year is over.
