Lisandro Martinez admits Spain deserved World Cup in statement after Argentina heartbreak

Lisandro Martinez has shared an emotional message with Argentina fans following their World Cup final defeat.

His side were beaten 1-0 after extra-time by Spain on Sunday night.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the contest after Enzo Fernandez had earlier been sent off.

Violent scenes followed the final whistle as Leandro Paredes appeared to throw punches at Spain midfielder Gavi.

Neither Fernandez nor Paredes acknowledged Spain’s victory in their post-match social media statements.

The latter also failed to apologise for his full-time antics on the pitch in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Martinez statement

Martinez has joined captain Lionel Messi in congratulating the world champions on what he described as a ‘well-deserved’ win, though.

In a post on X, the 28-year-old wrote: “With a heavy heart for not having been able to bring home the cup that we all deserved, but with pride bursting at the seams for this jersey, for my teammates, the coaching staff, the executives, the medical team, the cooks, the kit men, and every single person who was involved to make all of this work in the best possible way.

“And, above all, for you, who showered us with all your love, all your strength, that passion that so defines us, and the unity of a nation that I hope endures over time.

“I want to congratulate Spain on their well-deserved title.

“And to our people, I want to say that the result doesn’t define the journey we took.

“We faced adversities, we made the impossible possible, and we never looked for excuses, only reasons to keep going.

“We defended our colors far beyond the pitch and shared unforgettable moments with the National Team, alongside our families and with the unwavering support of all Argentinians.

“It will always be an immense pride to represent you.

“Remember that ‘the fall of the great is the joy of the mediocre.’

“Thank you all so much. Let’s take care of our country. I love you, Argentina!”

Martinez started all but one of Argentina’s eight matches at this summer’s tournament, having been rested in their final group-stage clash with Jordan.

However, he was forced off injured during the first half of the final, though.

The Manchester United centre-back was replaced by Nicolas Otamendi in the 44th minute at the MetLife Stadium.

Martinez previously won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina as well as two Copa America titles.

Following the tournament, he now has 35 senior international caps to his name.
