Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones cherish New York buzz amid Knicks’ NBA Finals run

Madison Square Garden will be the epicenter of the sports world on Monday as the New York Knicks welcome the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

Tickets sold as fast as a fresh slice from Joe’s Pizza, and the bustling energy in the city has not been felt in a long time. The Knicks will host a finals game for the first time since 1999, and they have a good chance to close out the best-of-seven series at home.

It is hard to overstate the magnitude of the next two games in the Big Apple. Even New York Liberty stars Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones are reveling in the contagious buzz, as reported by the New York Post’s Madeline Kenney.

Ionescu and Jones know exactly how it feels to bring a championship to the city, with the Liberty winning their first title in 2024.

“You’re able to understand when you’re driving on the street or walking on the street, everyone’s in Knicks gear, everyone’s dialed into the game, the streets are packed. Everyone’s cheering, watching the game, and I think it’s a testament to the basketball culture here in New York City,” said Ionescu.

Jones added that it is hard to fully explain the vibe in New York when any of its sports teams is winning.

“We’ve been able to bring a championship to a city that loves the game of basketball, and obviously now, seeing the Knicks do it, and see the way that everybody’s supporting them is a great thing, and I just want the city to continue to be successful because it’s a special type of energy,” shared Jones.

The Liberty had to wait nearly three decades before they won their first crown. The Knicks are back in the NBA Finals after 27 years, and they truly feel like the team of destiny.

The Liberty and the Knicks are kindred spirits, bonded by their shared responsibility of uplifting and representing a city that always felt cursed and left starving for success in the sports world.

Now, more than ever, New York is awash with hope. And as they say, hope is undefeated.
