Caitlin Clark risks WNBA ban after yelling NSFW ‘scoreboard’ comment at opponent in historic Fever win

Caitlin Clark’s double-double powered the Indiana Fever to a historic win against the Connecticut Sun, but she now runs the risk of suspension after picking up another technical foul.

The superstar guard scored 27 points and added 11 assists in a commanding 123-88 win at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Indiana was in charge throughout, and took a 70-46 lead into the break — which marked their biggest half in franchise history.

When all was said and done, Wednesday’s win was the third-highest scoring game in league history, without overtime.

Clark, who has been announced as a cover star for the upcoming NBA 2K27 video game, has now helped the Fever to four wins in their last five, since bouncing back from injury.

But her seventh tech of the season means she’s now one away from a mandated suspension.

Clark’s latest penalty came after an exchange with Sun guard Saniya Rivers near the end of the third quarter.

After Indiana’s star drew a foul on Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Rivers had some choice words.

Clark made her way to the foul line, where the jawing continued.

“Look at the f***ing scoreboard,” she told her opponent, while pointing up at the board showing a 95-67 Fever lead.

Clark was held back by her teammates as she continued to trash talk, before both she and Rivers were given a technical.

A seventh on the WNBA season means Clark will have to pay another $1,000 fine.

She’s now one tech away from a mandated one-game suspension and a $1,500 penalty. Every two additional fouls received during the regular season will result in an additional ban.

The basketball superstar has walked a tightrope before, and came close to hitting the former seven-technical limit in her 2024 rookie season, but ended the year with six.

Clark suggested earlier this week that she won’t change her on-court approach to try and avoid getting techs.

Speaking postgame, she revealed exactly what was said in her exchange with Rivers.

“She said she was locking me up, so I said ‘scoreboard’ and the ref didn’t like that,” Clark said, with a laugh.

Kelsey Mitchell, sitting alongside her at the press conference, apparently wasn’t aware of the call.

She asked to clarify when the tech was called, and also gave a nervous laugh.

“It’s not funny, Kelsey,” Clark added.

“But I’m never going to back down from a moment.

“You’ve got to continue to try and control your emotions as best you can, that intensity and fire is what makes me, me.”

When asked if an eighth tech is ‘inevitable,’ Clark responded: “I don’t know. I can’t predict the future. You’ve got to ask a magic eight ball.”

Stephanie White urges Caitlin Clark to be ‘strategic’ with her emotions

While Clark and Mitchell didn’t appear too worried about a looming suspension, Fever head coach Stephanie White believes her star player needs to ‘pick and choose’ when to express her emotions on the court.

“She’s got to pick and choose and it’s every two (technicals) after that,” White said.

“So I think the biggest thing is she knows.

“She has awareness about it. We’ll try to help her when we can, but sometimes we can’t.

“And if she wants to be strategic about which game she doesn’t want to play, then she’ll let her fly.”

The Fever still have 18 games remaining in the regular season, once play resumes after the All-Star break.

Clark is currently tied with Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese for the most technical fouls in the league.

Heading into the All-Star Weekend, Indiana sits top of the Eastern Conference with a 17-10 record.

The team will hope Clark can keep her cool down the stretch, to ensure she misses as little action as possible heading into what should be an exciting playoff run come September.
