Latest Matthew Boyd injury update will catch Cubs fans’ attention

The Chicago Cubs have been without Matthew Boyd in the starting rotation since he was placed on the 15-day IL on May 6. After being given a return timeline of about six weeks after undergoing meniscectomy on his left knee, manager Cragi Counsell and the organization received an important update about Boyd’s status.

Reports indicate that the 35-year-old left-hander will be throwing off the mound on Saturday, May 16, with plans of participating in a bullpen session in the following week. His expected return of late June or early July is still on track.

“Underwent left knee meniscectomy on May 7. Has resumed throwing,” said the report. “Plans to throw lightly off mound May 16 with goal of throwing a bullpen session at some point next week, per manager Craig Counsell. Timeline (six weeks) unchanged.”

The Cubs lost Matthew Boyd to a knee injury in perhaps the most untimely way imaginable. It didn’t happen in a game or during practice. Instead, Boyd suffered a knee injury while attempting to sit down to play with his children at home. Luckily, it wasn’t too serious, as he is expected to return to action in the summer.

While Boyd works his way back from injury, the Cubs will continue relying on Shota Imanaga, Edward Cabrera, Jameson Taillon, Colin Rea, and Ben Brown in the starting rotation. Even with the injury woes, Chicago is still in first place in the NL Central, owning a 2.5-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals, who are both tied for second place.

The Cubs will have a chance to maintain their lead in the division on Saturday. Chicago is scheduled to take on the Chicago White Sox at 7:10 p.m. EST for the second contest of a three-game series. The Cubs are considered the away team for this series.

Boyd played just five games before sustaining the left knee injury. The 12-year veteran was having a bit of a rough go to begin the season, though. Through 24.0 innings pitched, Boyd owns a 6.00 ERA and 1.292 WHIP with 31 strikeouts.
