Justin Jefferson’s five-word Vikings quarterback verdict amid cryptic Murray and McCarthy message
The Minnesota Vikings have a big decision to make ahead of the 2026 season.
With OTA’s on the horizon, the Vikings will know they have one of the most fascinating quarterback competitions in the league on their hands.

The battle will be between first round pick J.J. McCarthy, who has had his Vikings career defined by injuries leading some to speculate whether he should be traded.
An underwhelming season in 2025 for Minnesota saw them finish 9-8 and miss out on the playoffs.
With plenty of talent on the roster, the expectations in Minnesota are championship-level no matter who wins the job.
Speaking about the looming battle between McCarthy and Murray, wide receiver Justin Jefferson emphasized the strength of the roster surrounding the quarterback position.
“The RB position is very good. The WR position is very good. The TE position is very good,” Jefferson said on Good Morning Football.
“Just competition, for real, just to see, who’s gonna be that last man standing, who’s gonna be ‘that dawg’, who’s gonna be that leader to carry us throughout the season?
“That is definitely a missing piece that we’re looking for and something that is very important to our team, which is the quarterback spot.
“Just seeing that competition battle, seeing those guys come in every single day leading the team and trying to spark, especially the offense, it’s definitely something I’m looking forward to.
“Just going out there and connecting with any quarterback that’s going out there and throwing the ball, that’s the main important thing this training camp.”
Jefferson would conclude his comments with a message to the pair.

“May the best man win.”
McCarthy vs Murray for QB1 in Minnesota
McCarthy, drafted 10th overall out of Michigan in the 2024 NFL Draft, missed his entire rookie season with an injury and then stuttered through the 2025 campaign.
On the other side, Kyler Murray who landed with the Vikings on a one-year deal following his release from the Arizona Cardinals after seven seasons.
Murray, the first overall pick for the Cards in 2019, went to the playoffs one time in his career and struggled to find his footing in Arizona.
He is looking to become head coach Kevin O’Connell’s next reclamation project, after Sam Darnold turned his career around in the Twin Cities and Daniel Jones went on to success in Indianapolis after a stop under O’Connell.
Carson Wentz, drafted second overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2016 Draft, signed with the team as McCarthy’s backup late in the 2025 offseason.

He started five games when McCarthy was injured, going 2-3 while passing for 1,216 yards and six TDs with five interceptions. He re-upped with the Vikings in 2026.
While many view Murray as the favorite to claim the starting gig for Week 1, the front office is adamant that the role must be earned on the practice field.
O’Connell is reportedly keeping an entirely open mind, viewing the upcoming OTA’s as a completely blank slate for all three signal-callers.
With the league’s most explosive passing weapon in Jefferson, the winning quarterback will be stepping into a goldmine of offensive utility.
The battle in the Twin Cities promises to be one of the most paid attention to as the league season draws nearer.
Preseason games against the Giants, Ravens and Broncos may offer an additional clue, but all eyes are on the Week 1 opener against the Green Bay Packers as U.S.Bank Stadium.
