Insider says Warriors rebuild is clear in theory, tough in reality

After losing in the final game of the NBA Play-In, the Golden State Warriors are left at a crossroads. The tail end of the season was marred by significant time missed by both Jimmy Butler and Steph Curry due to injury, and the Warriors’ future, as currently constructed, is uncertain.

While Golden State still wants to find a way to maximize the final years of Curry’s career as an elite player, ESPN NBA insider Anthony Slater believes that a full rebuild should be on the table for the Dubs. But doing one successfully seems more like a fantasy than a reality.

“One of the troubles for all sides here is this awkward transition phase that they’re in where I think we both know that if this was being played on a video game or we were just doing fantasy GM here it’s time to hit the full rebuild. It’s time to hit the reset thing. It’s time to trade all your best assets for picks and tear down. And part of that would be bringing in a young coach. A Jordi Fernandez is a very good example…Also, one of the main things within this that has been told to me by multiple people, is the injuries to Butler and Moody shifted that even more.”

As Steve Kerr is set to meet with Mike Dunleavy and the Warriors’ front office staff, per reporting by ClutchPoints senior NBA reporter Brett Siegel, a change could surely be coming for the Warriors in a Western Conference that continues to become more and more competitive every season.

Where Golden State could rank among the Western Conference powers in the near future remains to be seen.
