How Logan Gilbert can make Mariners history vs. Padres

Logan Gilbert does not get the endorsement deals that outfielder Julio Rodriguez does. He has yet to redefine how fans look at his position the way catcher Cal Raleigh did in 2025. He does not carry a catchy nickname like “Señor Smoke” or “Furious George.” But the right-handed starting pitcher is undoubtedly a core member of the 2020s Seattle Mariners, and he will soon have the accolades to prove it.

Gilbert is just two strikeouts away from jumping Mike Moore for fifth-most in M’s history, the team’s public relations X account posted. He should reach 938 career Ks at some point during Saturday’s home game against the San Diego Padres.

Surpassing all-time great lefty Randy Johnson and potential Hall of Famer Felix Hernandez will be difficult, but assuming he stays healthy, the 2024 All-Star could leap above Mark Langston (1,078) later this year. Additionally, Gilbert ranks third all-time among Seattle hurlers in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (9.515).

The No. 14 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft has experienced some scuffles through the first seven weeks of the 2026 campaign, but he was magnificent in his last time out. Gilbert gave up only one hit and struck out nine batters in six scoreless innings versus the Chicago White Sox last Sunday. He owns a 3.78 ERA with 52 Ks and a 1.160 WHIP entering his start against the Padres.

The 29-year-old may not receive a standing ovation once he achieves this upcoming milestone, but T-Mobile Park surely appreciates what he has already contributed to the organization. A healthy and sharp Logan Gilbert should be an essential part of any meaningful Mariners campaign moving forward.
