Golden Knights’ Mitch Marner makes NHL history with 6:10 hat trick vs. Hurricanes

The Vegas Golden Knights had an excellent second period in Game 3 against the Carolina Hurricanes. Tomas Hertl opened the scoring with his incredible goal after two other markers were disallowed. Then, Mitch Marner took over, scoring a natural hat trick in the middle frame.

This is a historic hat trick, as well. Marner scored all three of his goals within six minutes and 10 seconds. This is the fastest hat trick in NHL history, according to NHL Public Relations. Previously, Maurice Richard held the record, scoring a hat trick in six minutes 21 seconds 69 years ago.

The Golden Knights were unable to keep this 4-0 lead, though. Vegas surrendered four goals in the third period, becoming the first team to blow a 4-0 lead in the third period in the Stanley Cup Final. The Hurricanes forced overtime, but the Golden Knights came out on top in double overtime thanks to Shea Theodore.

Marner is having the best postseason of his career. Following his four-point performance in Game 3, he now has 10 goals and 28 points in these playoffs. Not only are these personal bests, his 28 points are the most in a single postseason for a Golden Knights player. Marner surpassed Jack Eichel, who scored 26 points during the 2023 Stanley Cup run.

The Golden Knights certainly did not want to spoil Marner’s effort. A loss would have given the Hurricanes needed momentum heading into Game 4 on Tuesday night. Now, Vegas is seeking to take a commanding 3-1 series lead in the Final on Tuesday. And they will have home ice once again as they look for a second straight win.
