Evgeni Malkin’s true feelings on NHL future amid Penguins uncertainty

The Pittsburgh Penguins are out of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. And as a result, offseason questions are beginning to take center stage. One of the most pressing questions involving the Penguins is the future of center Evgeni Malkin. Malkin is one of the best players in franchise history. But he could wear a different sweater next season, as he is an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Malkin has won three Stanley Cups and has spent his entire career with the Penguins. He has done almost everything a player can do in this league. Despite this, he still wants to continue his career. “I mean, I want to play (in the) NHL, for sure,” Malkin said on Friday, via NHL.com.

However, the Penguins legend is not oblivious to the situation. Pittsburgh has actively sought to add younger talent over the last few years. The 39-year-old is still effective, having scored 61 points this past season. At the same time, he’s certainly no spring chicken, and he knows he may need to find a new home next season.

“I know it’s not easy for (Penguins GM Kyle Dubas). Maybe he wants new blood here. I understand it’s business, and I understand he wants maybe (a) new team, see new faces here. But for me, I want to play one more year in the NHL. I’m not looking (to go) back to KHL, play in Russia. But if not Pittsburgh, I hope some team,” Malkin said on Friday.

The future Hall of Famer won’t hit free agency until July 1, so there is still time to figure things out. This being said, the reality of Malkin wearing a different jersey next season is a possibility he is prepared for if a new contract can’t be worked out.
