Even Jimmy Haslam’s dad was shocked to see him trade Myles Garrett, Giannis

Jimmy Haslam is already on “Wanted” posters throughout Northeast Ohio, but his notoriety has now expanded further across the Midwest and into Wisconsin. The Cleveland Browns and Milwaukee Bucks co-owner was one of the individuals who oversaw the trades of unstoppable edge rusher Myles Garrett and superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo in June. These massive moves have produced a bevy of emotions.

Even the fans who support those decisions blame ownership for not taking the necessary steps to avoid such a desperate scenario. Haslam is hearing it from many people, including his own father, Pilot Company founder James “Jim” Haslam II.

“My dad’s 95 and a half, but he still follows every sports move we make, and he called up after we traded Giannis and he goes, ‘Do you know that in the last month you’ve traded Myles Garrett and Giannis?'” Haslam recalled at Browns training camp on Friday, per The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov. “And I said ‘yes, sir I know that.'”

Haslam and his fellow shot-callers had time to formulate a plan, as both Garrett and Antetokounmpo were mired in trade rumors for more than a year. It became increasingly more likely that they would both be in new homes by summer’s end. There was overwhelming pressure to get a good haul in return.

The Browns dealt the two-time Defensive Player of the Year and new single-season sacks record-holder to the Los Angeles Rams for two-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick, a 2028 second-rounder and a 2029 third-rounder. Milwaukee sent the 2021 Finals MVP and two-time regular season MVP, along with Bobby Portis, to the Miami Heat in exchange for 2024-25 All-Star Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, Nate Ament (No. 13 overall pick), 2031 and 2033 first-rounders, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-rounder.

The Bucks probably could not have done better in their Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster, but plenty of fans thought the Browns should have acquired more draft capital for Myles Garrett. Jimmy Haslam must hope that he pulled the trigger at the right time and secured enough talent to revive these respective franchises.

The public is skeptical, and by the sound of it, so is his father.
