The Three Lions will take to the field in Tampa before rounding off their pre-tournament schedule with a meeting against Costa Rica in Orlando next week. They will then travel to Kansas, their base for the competition, where they hope to remain for a deep run lasting well into July.

Thomas Tuchel’s squad assembled in West Palm Beach on Monday for a warm-weather training camp designed to help the players adapt to the conditions they may encounter during the tournament, particularly should their route take them to the humid climate of Miami.

England arrive at the World Cup as one of the leading contenders and will be aiming to end a 60-year wait for major international silverware, having not lifted a trophy since their famous World Cup triumph in 1966.

Their qualification campaign was flawless, with eight victories from eight matches and not a single goal conceded. However, their most recent outings proved more challenging, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Uruguay before suffering a defeat to Japan at Wembley in March.

Several Arsenal players involved in Sunday’s Champions League final are yet to join the squad, but a number of exciting young talents who have travelled to Florida despite not being part of the final World Cup selection could feature. Alex Scott, Ethan Nwaneri, Rio Ngumoha and Josh King are all in contention to make their senior England debuts.

After facing Costa Rica on Wednesday evening, England will head to Kansas to complete their preparations for their opening Group L fixture against Croatia in Dallas. Matches against Ghana in Boston and Panama in New York will then follow as they look to secure a place in the knockout stages.

New Zealand, meanwhile, are preparing for only their third World Cup appearance and their first since 2010.

Saturday’s encounter will be their second friendly on American soil after a difficult start to their preparations, having suffered a 4-0 defeat to Haiti earlier this week before moving on to their tournament base in San Diego.

The All Whites are managed by Englishman Darren Bazeley, one of only two English coaches set to lead a nation at this summer’s World Cup, alongside Sweden boss Graham Potter. The Northampton-born former Watford, Walsall and Wolves defender has been in charge of New Zealand for the past three years.

New Zealand booked their place at the tournament as early as March last year, long before many countries had even begun qualifying. That early qualification gave them ample opportunity to arrange fixtures against stronger opposition from outside Oceania in preparation for their return to the world’s biggest stage.

Results since then have been mixed. In their 11 matches following qualification, they have recorded just two victories, beginning with a win over Ivory Coast in Toronto last summer before defeating Chile 4-1 in Auckland earlier this year.

The remaining nine games have produced only one draw and eight defeats, the latest being Tuesday’s heavy loss to Haiti, a result that raises further questions about their prospects of claiming a first-ever World Cup victory.

Their campaign gets underway against Iran in Los Angeles before further Group L fixtures against Egypt and Belgium in Vancouver.

England and New Zealand have met only twice previously, both matches coming during England’s four-game tour of Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia in June 1991.

Gary Lineker scored the only goal in a narrow victory in Auckland, while strikes from Stuart Pearce and David Hirst helped Graham Taylor’s side secure a 2-0 win in Wellington a few days later.

England will expect to begin their World Cup preparations with a positive result against opposition they will be confident of overcoming, while a number of players will still be hoping to impress Tuchel and stake a claim for a starting place in the opening group match against Croatia on 17 June.
