England star Djed Spence in surprise transfer talks over move to European giants

Djed Spence has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Italian champions Inter Milan.

Inter have been in talks with Tottenham over a deal for the full-back, reports journalist Fabrizio Romano.

England international Spence is said to be open to joining the Serie A giants, who won their 21st Scudetto in 2025/26.

Versatile enough to line up in either full-back position, Spence could be a big asset to Inter – who are managed by an adaptable former defender of their own, Cristian Chivu.

The Nerazzurri are looking to replace Denzel Dumfries after the Netherlands right-back left for Real Madrid earlier this month.

Spence’s redemption

Having had his inclusion in England’s World Cup squad questioned at first, Spence  – who has been playing in a protective mask after breaking his jaw in May – went on to play a key role off the bench in helping Thomas Tuchel’s men over the line against Norway in Saturday’s quarter-final.

The interest from Inter comes off the back of a season in which the 25-year-old made 30 Premier League appearances for Spurs as they fought off relegation.

Spence made the switch to Tottenham from Middlesbrough in 2022 and has featured 85 times in all.

During the first couple of years of his time at Spurs, the former Fulham academy player had three loan spells away from North London.

And one of those came in Italy, where he played 16 Serie A games for Genoa in the latter part of the 2023/24 campaign.

That followed loan stints at French side Rennes and then-Championship Leeds.

Spence had previously impressed on loan from Middlesbrough at Nottingham Forest, starring in their return to the Premier League as 2021/22 Championship play-off winners.

Capped 13 times by England, Spence has featured in all six of the Three Lions’ matches en route to the World Cup semi-finals.

And his exploits as a substitute against Norway might have secured him a starting berth for Wednesday’s hugely anticipated showdown with holders Argentina.

‘A dangerous winger’

Such was his impact in an attacking sense, former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino floated the idea of deploying Spence as a winger.

“I think he looks such a dangerous winger because he’s so quick and direct,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. “And I actually feel like, Thomas, you could use Djed further up the pitch quite comfortably.”

England face their great rivals in Atlanta as they look to reach their first World Cup final since 1966.

The winners of that clash will take on Spain for the trophy, after the European champions comfortably dispatched France in the first semi-final on Tuesday.
