Dwight Howard’s ex demands $20K for legal fees amid divorce

Dwight Howard’s ex wants to make sure her legal fees are covered.

The two-time NBA champion filed for divorce from his estranged wife back in March, citing the marriage as “irretrievably broken.” Now, Amy Luciani (real name Amber Howard) is reportedly demanding temporary alimony as well as $20,000 to be covered in her legal fees per Us Weekly. Luciani claims that since their divorce battle, she cannot maintain the same lifestyle she did previously.

In court documents obtained by the outlet, the former couple previously agreed she “would be a stay-at-home wife for the entirety of their marriage.” Luciani claims that Howard is the “breadwinner” of the household and that while he retired from the NBA in March 2026, he is still employed by the NBA and has a “significant” income. As for her own financial situation, she claims she’s “presently unemployed” and still “completely dependent” on Howard.

She claims that she is currently “unable to both afford a place to live and maintain her day-to-day expenses” and needs alimony in order to do so. The couple got married in January 2025 and claims that she “dedicated her life and career to the care and well-being of the family.”

“Respondent has been reliant upon the financial stability and support of the Petitioner as her primary source of financial support. Throughout the parties’ marriage, Petitioner was the sole financial provider for the family unit,” Luciani’s filing read per the outlet.

“Petitioner’s financial condition is far superior to that of [the] respondent, and he has the ability to pay the same. Respondent has no other access to funds,” the documents state.

Luciani claims that the litigation has already put a strain on her finances and that she wants a hearing to discuss her temporary alimony and legal fee demand.

So far, there has not been a hearing date set.

Six months after the couple got married, Luciani filed for divorce in July 2025 following his June 2025 petition. However, they rekindled their romance and decided to not go through with the divorce. These set of demands by Luciani follow her claims of drug use on Howard’s part which he has denied. Howard claimed that she had threatened him with “a knife, gun, or other deadly weapon” and was ordered to stay 100 feet away from the NBA champion and his children from previous relationships.

Howard has not spoken out about Luciani’s demands at this time.
