Dodgers land Tarik Skubal in blockbuster trade with Tigers

After coming up just short against the Boston Red Sox in a Friday Night Showdown at Chavez Ravine, the Los Angeles Dodgers gave their fans one heck of a consolation prize in the form of Tarik Skubal, the Cy Young-winning former Detroit Tigers pitcher widely viewed as the grand prize of the MLB trade deadline.

With ESPN’s Jeff Passan announcing the initial news, the MLB Insider broke down the parameters of the deal shortly thereafter, noting that Los Angeles would be surrendering three players for the All-Star’s services.

“The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring Tarik Skubal for outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan and right-hander Brady Smith, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote.

Interestingly enough, the initial parameters of the deal, noted by The Athletic’s Ken Rosentstein, did not include River Ryan, a player fans have been high on for about a decade now, but instead Emmet Sheehan, the Dodgers’ fourth-year pitcher who has been starting all year in Dave Roberts’ six-man rotation. While Sheehan has struggled a bit in 2026, holding an ERA of 4.95 over 92.2 innings pitched, he is just 26 and could remain a part of the Dodgers’ rotation for years to come, even if he shifts to the bullpen this postseason to make way for Skubal.

But the real takeaway from this news? Andrew Friedman landed Tarik Skubal without surrendering a single member of his current team, with young outfield prospects like Josue De Paula, Mike Sirota, and Eduardo Quintero still in their system even after losing Zyhir Hope. Though the rest of the league may hate it, fans in Los Angeles will be celebrating tonight, even after watching the Dodgers take a loss to the Red Sox.
