Dodgers’ Dave Roberts gets 100% real about 12-1 Orioles beatdown

Even a team as mighty as the Los Angeles Dodgers can have its fair share of off days. On Sunday, it was the Dodgers’ turn to be on the receiving end of a demolition, with the Baltimore Orioles coming into town to take a 12-1 victory at Dodger Stadium. It was not a good night whatsoever for starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan, as he lasted just 3.1 innings on the mound after allowing six earned runs on eight hits.

In a long season, these kinds of losses tend to be inevitable, even for the reigning World Series champion Dodgers. From the jump on Sunday, they did not stand a chance; Sheehan allowed the first four Orioles batters to reach base, and that just set the tone for what ended up being a brutal outing for LA.

After the game, manager Dave Roberts admitted that his team simply wasn’t very good on the night on both sides of the ball.

“It just wasn’t a great start for our team and offensively, we weren’t very good,” Roberts said in his postgame presser, via SportsNet LA.

Roberts did not have many good things, if any at all, to say about Sheehan after he put the Dodgers on the backfoot right from the opening pitch.

“He just wasn’t sharp. He really wasn’t. The slider wasn’t in zone. They were seeing him well. He wasn’t efficient. It was a grind for him,” Roberts added.

The Dodgers have been utilizing their depth all season long, giving their pitching staff plenty of days off in between starts to preserve their long-term health. Sheehan has been part of the rotation, and for the most part, his stuff has been giving opponents plenty of trouble.

Sheehan, however, has been allowing plenty of hard contact, especially on Sunday, and the Dodgers starter will have to reel himself in if he were to stick around as a weapon in the rotation.
