Cubs announce roster move after activating Edward Cabrera from IL

The Chicago Cubs officially activated starting pitcher Edward Cabrera from the injured list on Friday. Cabrera had been trending in the right direction in his recovery from a blister on his finger. Now, he is set to join the Cubs’ starting rotation once again. Meanwhile, Chicago optioned right-handed pitcher Tyler Ferguson to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Ferguson, 32, previously pitched for the Athletics. He appeared in 48 games in 2024 and 56 games during the 2025 campaign with the Athletics. After only one MLB outing in 2026, he was traded to the Cubs. Chicago promoted him to the MLB ball club on June 2, but Ferguson did not appear in any games.

So far in 16 total minor league games at Triple-A in 2026, Ferguson has pitched to a 5.12 ERA. However, he’s turned in a 3.52 ERA in six appearances with the Cubs’ Triple-A team.

Ferguson could receive another MLB opportunity at some point down the road.

Cabrera has made 10 starts in 2026 with the Cubs. The 28-year-old starter has turned in a 4.00 ERA during that span. Cabrera was placed on the IL in late May, which added another concern to a Cubs’ ball club that has dealt with no shortage of injuries. Cabrera’s return will give them a crucial boost, though.

On Friday, Chicago is set to begin a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field. The Giants have struggled this year, but they feature enough talent to pull off an upset in any given contest.

First pitch for Friday’s game between the teams is scheduled for 2:20 PM EST.
