It would be an understatement to say the jury is out on Chelsea’s ownership group BlueCo, led by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

It is easy to forget now, but when BlueCo bought the club in the summer of 2022, it was taking over a team who had been crowned European champions a little over 12 months earlier.

The season before the takeover, Chelsea had finished third in the Premier League, behind only Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp. 

In Thomas Tuchel, they had a manager capable of competing with those two behemoths, and although Roman Abramovich’s forced departure was chaotic, there was plenty of optimism around Stamford Bridge back then.

Yet things have not gone to plan for BlueCo, who seemed to imagine controlling a football club would be much easier than it has been.

Boehly in particular was not shy in offering tips on how the world’s most popular sport could improve, drawing on his experience working in baseball and basketball in the US. We do not hear as much from him these days.

Chelsea have only finished in the top four in one of the four seasons in which BlueCo have called the shots. In 2022/23, they finished 12th. Last term, the Blues ended in 10th.

They are now onto their sixth permanent manager of the BlueCo era, after Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.

Xabi Alonso arrives in west London aiming to restore Chelsea to their former glories. He did an excellent job at Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, but Alonso lasted in the Real Madrid dugout for only a few months.

A tilt at the Premier League title is not expected in his debut season, but Chelsea must kick on after a hugely frustrating 2025/26. 

Their preparations for the new campaign continue on Wednesday, when Juventus provide the opposition in Hong Kong.

Not easy for Chelsea

We should not read too much into pre-season results, but Xabi Alonso will have been disappointed with his side’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Chelsea were victorious against Western Sydney a few days earlier, yet they conceded four goals in a 6-4 win.

Juventus have beaten Standard Liege and Nice up to now, having begun the summer with a goalless draw against Basel.

They are further ahead in their pre-season than Chelsea and that will likely have an impact on Wednesday’s result.

Attacks to have joy

Juventus’ three friendlies so far have contained a total of just three goals, while there have been 13 strikes in Chelsea’s two outings.

We expect the goal-heavy trend to continue for the Blues, whose defensive frailties appear to remain unfixed.

Defensive rigour is never at its highest level in pre-season anyway, and the various attacking players on display will be keen to show what they can do.

A clean sheet will probably elude both Chelsea and Juventus, with a minimum of three goals overall a distinct possibility.

Chelsea may need comeback

Many managers change their entire XI at half-time of pre-season friendlies, but Xabi Alonso did not do so against Tottenham Hotspur.

Ten of Chelsea’s 11 starters lasted until at least the midway point of the second half, with Romeo Lavia the only player who was replaced at the interval.

Chelsea were slow starters last time out, falling behind through a Sandro Tonali effort for Spurs, although the Blues managed to get back on level terms quickly.

But Juventus have scored first in their last two matches and will back themselves to do so again here.
