Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla addresses Jayson Tatum injury concerns vs. 76ers

Boston Celtics fans are reeling after watching their team lose Game 6 versus the Philadelphia 76ers, but they are probably more worried about the possibility of losing Jayson Tatum to an injury setback. The C’s future, both in these playoffs and beyond, could be in serious jeopardy if the superstar forward is forced to undergo another long recovery process. Luckily, head coach Joe Mazzulla does not seem overly concerned right now.

Despite leaving Thursday’s 106-93 loss early, Tatum is apparently not hurt.

“No. He went in the back, just got stretched, got some treatment,” Mazzulla said, per Bobby Manning of Celtics on CLNS. “That was about it.”

Tatum has played 22 games since rupturing his Achilles in last year’s postseason, so fans will naturally fret when he leaves with an apparent calf issue. However, it does not sound like he is presently in danger of missing Saturday night’s do-or-die clash in TD Garden.

The four-time All-NBA First-Team selection scored 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting and also secured 11 rebounds in defeat. He logged only 29 minutes, as Philly overpowered Boston in Xfinity Mobile Arena. Hopefully, his leg is feeling alright on Friday.

Tatum pushed himself to the brink, expending a significant amount of physical and mental energy to rejoin his team before the playoffs. It would be devastating for the 28-year-old, the franchise and the fan base if the Celtics’ campaign ended on their own floor and in the first round.

A healthy Jayson Tatum decreases the chances of that happening. His condition will surely be a topic of interest before Game 7.
