Brewers news: Milwaukee brings back veteran bullpen option on minor league deal

The Milwaukee Brewers have re-signed right-handed pitcher Jacob Waguespack to a new minor league contract, according to MLB.com transaction logs, bringing the 32-year-old back into the organization.

Waguespack had been pitching for Triple-A Nashville before Milwaukee released him earlier in the month on May 4. The move allowed him to explore potential major league opportunities elsewhere. After no immediate MLB openings emerged, he returned to the Brewers on a fresh minor league agreement and has been assigned to the club’s Arizona complex for a short ramp-up period.

Once his tune-up work is complete, Waguespack is expected to rejoin Triple-A Nashville later this season. Milwaukee’s decision to bring him back reflects the organization’s continued emphasis on maintaining experienced pitching depth across its minor league system, especially amid early-season injury concerns affecting roster stability.

Before his release, Waguespack displayed strong strikeout ability in Triple-A Nashville, striking out 23 over 16 innings against 68 hitters. He has continued to rely on a fastball averaging around 92 mph, complemented by a cutter and changeup in the mid-80s. That said, the command wasn’t always there, as he also allowed eight runs (four earned) and walked 11.

Earlier in the season, Waguespack carried a 2.25 ERA over his first 11 appearances (16 innings) with Nashville, continuing a pattern of strong run prevention at the Triple-A level in recent years.

In 2025, Waguespack split time between the Triple-A affiliates of the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies, where he logged a 2.45 ERA across 33 combined innings. Still, he did not receive a major league call-up that season. The veteran right-hander last appeared in the big leagues in 2024 with Tampa Bay, where he worked limited MLB innings after returning from overseas play in Japan following the 2021 season.

For the Brewers, the move restores a familiar bullpen option who can provide organizational depth at the upper levels, with his immediate assignment to Arizona serving as preparation for a return to Nashville later in the season.
