Bengals OT shares hilarious dinner story about Dexter Lawrence

The Cincinnati Bengals made a blockbuster roster move over the weekend, acquiring defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants in exchange for the No. 10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The deal came after contract extension talks between Lawrence and New York stalled, which led the Giants to place him on the trade block.

Cincinnati targeted Lawrence to address a clear defensive need following the departure of Trey Hendrickson in free agency. The organization viewed Lawrence’s proven ability as more valuable than a potential rookie selection, especially for a team looking to contend immediately.

Lawrence, listed at 6-foot-4 and 342 pounds, made an instant impression upon arrival. Offensive tackle Amarius Mims, who stands 6-foot-8 and weighs 350 pounds, described a memorable first meeting during a team dinner on Sunday.

“I met him last night,” said Mims. “Went to dinner last night. I just shook his hand, and I’m a big dude. So, I shake his hand, and I’m like, ‘Alright, big guy, shake hands, kind of bring it in, like’ [he demonstrated the handshake]. I went backwards.”

“I’m like, ‘Oh, man. Alright, alright.’ He’s a dude, too,” Mims added. “So, I’m like, ‘Man, I’m happy he’s here.’ I’m glad we’re teammates, and like I said, I feel bad for the opposing offensive lines more than us. We’ve got to practice against him. Don’t get me wrong. So, he can do some damage there, but I’d much rather be his teammate than go against him. I’m happy he’s here. We’re all excited about him, just trying to get better every day until the season starts. So, let’s get to work.”

Mims, entering his third NFL season, previously faced Lawrence in 2024 when the Bengals defeated the Giants 17-7 at MetLife Stadium.

Lawrence also reunited with BJ Hill, as the two arrived together in Cincinnati following the trade. The Bengals are banking on Lawrence to anchor the defensive line and breathe some steel backbone into a unit that’s been patchy at best, often undone by the injury bug in recent seasons.
