Belgium vs Senegal prediction

Five points from their three matches ended up being enough for Belgium to finish top of Group G, their 5-1 thrashing of New Zealand on the final day of the group lifting them into a first place finish, after only having managed draws against Egypt and Iran in their opening matches.

Despite not being convincing in their first two games of the World Cup, Rudi Garcia’s side ultimately achieved what they set out to do – finish top of Group G to ensure what they had hoped would be an easier route into the latter stages of the competition.

Whether that has panned out is a different matter though, with the Red Devils having been drawn against African “champions” Senegal, who ended the campaign as one of the best third placed finishers in their group.

Belgium failed to make it past the group stage of the last World Cup in Qatar, so have already improved on that performance, and still have a large number of the squad that reached the semi finals of the competition in 2018 in Russia.

Despite winning just one of their three matches so far in the tournament, the Belgians are undefeated in their last 16 matches in all competitions, a run dating back to March last year, and will be expectant of reaching the last 16 with victory over Senegal on Wednesday night.

Senegal will be looking to qualify for the round of 16 of the World Cup for just the third time in their history and their second time in succession when they take to the field against Belgium in Seattle on Wednesday night.

Pape Thiaw’s side fell to defeats in each of their opening two matches of this summer’s competition, losing 3-1 to France before being beaten 3-2 by Norway to leave them pointless with only one match of their Group I campaign remaining.

Four goals in their final 35 minutes of group stage action saw them record a 5-0 win over Iraq which managed to secure them the goal difference to sneak through as the final third placed team to reach the knockout stage – the only third place finishers to reach the last 32 having accrued fewer than four points.

Victory against the Iraqis in Toronto ended the Lions of Teranga’s four match winless run which included three defeats, and will be hopeful to carry some momentum into Wednesday’s clash in Seattle, which will be the first ever meeting between the two nations.

Neither team have been particularly impressive in the World Cup so far, but Belgium’s firepower and overall quality across the pitch and throughout the squad should see them into the last 16 at the expense of their African opponents – a 2-0 Red Devils win perhaps on the cards.

Belgium vs Senegal best bets

Red Devils tame Lions of Teranga

Belgium make the trip to Seattle on a 16 match unbeaten run stretching back to March 2025.

Despite Rudi Garcia’s side not having set the group stage alight, particularly after being held to draws in each of their opening clashes, they did manage to put five past New Zealand in their most recent match to ensure they finish top of Group G.

Senegal’s win over Iraq in their final group game saw them squeeze into the last 32 as the final third place team to qualify, having been beaten in each of their opening two matches.

Pape Thiaw’s side have now won just one of their last five matches ahead of Wednesday’s match, and Belgium’s strength in squad both on the pitch and off the bench should see them through to the last 16.

Trossard on target again

Leandro Trossard has probably been Belgium’s standout player so far in this World Cup campaign, and leads the Red Devils’ scoring tally for the competition this summer having bagged the opening two goals in their 5-1 win against New Zealand in Vancouver.

The 31-year-old also played a large role in helping Arsenal win their first Premier League title in 22 years and reach the final of the Champions League, so will be more used to playing in these high pressure matches than most in recent weeks.

Niak-card-te

No Senegal player has been penalised on more occasions than Moussa Niakhate in the group stage campaign and the former Nottingham Forest centre back is set to be in for another long and difficult match against a Belgium side packed with stars.
